I have taught English online since 2011, and have worked as a full time private tutor and teacher for over 4 years. For the last 2 years I have taught as Head of English for an online home school, which provides live lessons for Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) students from all over the world. I am also an approved AQA examiner, qualified to mark papers in GCSE and A Level Language and Literature.

I studied English Literature at the University of Bristol and received a First Class BA Hons. However, it wasn’t all plain sailing. I am dyslexic and I found it so difficult to meet the reading requirements for each week. Though I loved my subject and worked as hard as I could, I wasn’t getting the grades I wanted. It was stressful and confusing for me to not know whether an essay I’d completed was going to come back with a high or low grade, or what the difference was between the two.

I often come across students who have no passion for English and no confidence in themselves as writers. It took me years to learn how to write good essays and exam answers, how to study texts properly and clearly organise my thoughts. I realised that I’d never been taught what an essay was, or how to write one.

I made Scrbbly for students who, like me, feel like they need some extra help. I want you to understand that skills can be learned, and people aren’t just naturally good or bad writers: anyone can learn to write well with the proper teaching. English as a subject is not about reading quickly or even spelling well - it’s about communication, creativity and expressing your own ideas.
